World GDP ranking — the size of each economy

World Bank World Development Indicators, 2024

GDP is everything a country newly produced in a year, added up. National figures collected by the World Bank are converted to dollars and ranked. It is the most common measure of a country's size, but it takes no account of how many people live there — a large population climbs the table even when each person is worse off.

Only the 200 countries with a 2024 figure are ranked. Countries that report late are missing.

Nominal GDP is converted to dollars, so a move in exchange rates changes the ranking even when nothing changed at home — which is why the PPP measure is kept separately.

Common questions

QWhere does Korea rank?

Korea's rank and figure are pinned at the top of the table. Even when it falls outside the visible rows it is appended below so it always stays in view.

QWhy do the ranks move each year?

The figures are converted to dollars, so a big move in exchange rates changes the ranking even when nothing changed at home. A weaker won shrinks Korea's dollar GDP by that much. For a view that accounts for prices and exchange rates, see GDP per capita (PPP).

QSome countries seem to be missing

Countries that have not yet reported that year to the World Bank drop out. Only countries with a figure are ranked, and the count is noted below the table.
