GDP per capita (PPP) — income adjusted for prices

World Bank World Development Indicators, 2024

The same $100 buys different amounts in different countries. Purchasing power parity recalculates GDP per capita with those price differences evened out. It also moves less when exchange rates swing, which makes it better than the nominal figure for comparing living standards.

Only the 195 countries with a 2024 figure are ranked. Countries that report late are missing.

Nominal GDP is converted to dollars, so a move in exchange rates changes the ranking even when nothing changed at home — which is why the PPP measure is kept separately.

Common questions

QWhy does it differ from the nominal ranking?

Countries where prices are low buy more with the same money and rise under PPP; expensive countries fall. Korea generally ranks higher on PPP than on nominal figures.

QHow is PPP worked out?

By pricing the same basket of goods across countries and deriving a conversion rate. What goes in the basket changes the answer, so it is closer to an estimate than a precise figure.
